In October 2011, a team of Czech anthropologists dug into the Kennedy family tree. Their goal was simple. They wanted to know if the notorious infidelity of Robert, John, and Ted Kennedy was a genetic curse.
They surveyed 86 cohabiting couples. They looked at relationship satisfaction. They checked for past infidelities. They asked about parental unfaithfulness.

But correlation is not causation. Scientists know this. The Czech study did hint at something deeper. It pointed toward genetics.
Earlier research had already flagged this. A 2008 study from Sweden made headlines. It identified allele 334. This genetic variation messes with how the brain processes vasopressin. Vasopressin helps with monogamous pair bonding. When it’s disrupted, commitment gets shaky.
Men with two copies of allele 334 were twice as likely to face major relationship crises. Their partners reported the lowest satisfaction levels. The biology seemed to be working against them.
Then came the dopamine factor.
Two years later, another team of scientists found a link to the dopamine D4 receptor gene. This gene is tied to addictive behavior. One variation, the 7R+ allele, reduces dopamine receptors in the brain’s reward system.
This same allele is linked to risk-taking. Think impulse spending. Smoking. Promiscuity.
In infidelity studies, men with the 7R+ allele reported more sexual partners. Were they more likely to cheat? Not necessarily. The 7R+ men were no more prone to adultery than those with the standard 7R- allele.
But here is where it gets interesting.
Once they crossed the line, they did so with more partners. The genetic predisposition didn’t force the act. It amplified the scale.
Geneticists are quick to temper these findings. They don’t want you thinking DNA is a crystal ball.
A 2010 study from Saint Thomas’ Hospital in London looked at 1,600 adult female twin pairs. They found that 38 percent of unfaithful behavior could be attributed to inheritable genes.
That number matters. It’s significant. But it’s not total.
It proves that predisposed cheaters aren’t at the mercy of vasopressin and dopamine-mangling DNA. Environmental factors play a huge role. Personal choice matters.
We aren’t robots programmed by our ancestors’ sins. We have agency. The genes might load the gun. But we pull the trigger.
Or we don’t.
The science is messy. It’s incomplete. It points to biological vulnerabilities but stops short of destiny.
